Rally Notes #2 – Friday AM/Early afternoon

5. The American Rally Association is equipping all competitors and course cars at the 2017 STPR Rally with EZTrak vehicle tracking devices.

These devices will enable event officials to know the location and movement status in real time and to be automatically alerted of any irregularities (e.g. if the cars have come to a stop on an active stage). They will also enable everybody who has access to the Internet to follow your movements and stage times at live.americanrallyassociation.org. A free iOS or Android smartphone app is also available from this same website, or you can search for ARARally in the Apple app store or in the Google Play store. After the morning registration period, it looks like 45 cars will start the 41st edition of the Waste Management Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally. A 46th entry, Gabriel and Victor Espinoza’s 1989 Suzuki GTI will run only tomorrow’s region event, which starts at the Germania service area at the beginning of stage 8The Cam Steely/Preston Osborn Ford Fiesta broke an axle at the Southern Ohio Rally two weeks ago, and the special-order replacement part did not come in time for them to compete this weekend at STPR.

  1. 44 cars left the Green on time at 2:01pm, and the Higgins/Drew Subaru started the rally at Stage #1 on time at 2:29pm. What was not expected was that both Barry McKenna/Leon Jordan Ford Fiesta and the Travis Pastrana/Robbie Durant Subaru WRX had a better time than 4-time defending champion David Higgins/Craig Drew.(see the EZTrak link detailed above). Although we have no confirmation yet to the cause of this problem, including no indication from the finish of stage #1 that the car had a mechanical problem, we might guess that a puncture was to blame. More to come.
